The Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses valuable finds from all over Crete including pottery, stone carvings, seals and statuettes. The treasures of the Minoan era can be admired in their historical contexts. Popular highlights include the Phaestos disc, classical Hellenic and Roman sculptures, frescoes, jewellery, wall paintings and pottery.
Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum of Crete, within the University of Crete, was established in 1980 and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the ecologically and culturally diverse environment of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Cretan Historical & Folklore Museum
The Historical Museum houses exhibits from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods along with historical documents of more recent Cretan history. Other noteworthy exhibits include a rich collection of folk art – comprising local costumes, textiles, woodcarvings and embroidery – and a representation of a typical Cretan house.
Nikos Kazantzakis Museum
The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is located in the picturesque and historic village of Varvari, the birthplace of Kazantzakis’s father, Captain Michalis. The museum houses relics and objects of the life of the great Cretan, celebrated Greek writer, translator and philosopher of the 20th century.
Archaeological Museum
Located in Rethymno town it exhibits relics found around the prefecture, dating from the Neolithic period to the Roman years. Among the exhibits are jewellery, tools, figurines and spearheads from the Neolithic period which were found in the Gerani Cave and in the cave of Ellenes Amariou.
The Historical and Folklore Museum
This museum exhibits a rich collection of local weaving art and techniques, traditional embroidered national and regional costumes, lace, basket-weaving, ceramic art, paintings and various items of folk art.
The Centre of Contemporary Art
Houses a rich collection of works by the local artist Kanakakis and a collection of representative modern Greek painting. Exhibitions of modern art are organised regularly in the gallery.



Natural History Museum
The Temenos Mastampa mosque or Mosque of Velli Pasa was built on the ruins of Catholic temple of Saint Onoufrios. The minaret dates back to 1789, making it the oldest minaret in Rethymno. Restoration of the mosque is in progress to accommodate an annex of the Goulandri Museum of Natural History.
Melidoni Cave
Melidoni cave is about 2 kms northwest of Melidoni village and its archaeological findings are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. The cave was also the mythical home of Talos - the giant bronze protector of Crete. Legend says that the sorceress Medea removed his protective thorn and he bled to death. 
The Archaeological Museum
The museum is housed in the Venetian Church of San Francesco and exhibits important finds dating from the Neolithic and Minoan periods to the late Roman era. The most important part of the exhibition is a collection of vases and weapons from the Minoan necropolis.
The Nautical Museum
This museum is located at the north-east of Chania’s Venetian harbour, in the Firkas Fortress.  It houses a collection of models ships from antiquity to modern times and a collection of relics from the historic battles of the Greek Navy such as guns, portraits of important Greek admirals and navigation equipment. 
The Historical Archives and Museum of Crete
This museum exhibits a collection of folklore and material related to the history of the island such as documents, maps, coins, religious vessels, pictures, etc... There are the second largest archives of Greece after the General Archives of the Greek State.  Personal memorabilia of Eleftherios Venizelos, the great statesman, are found here.
The War Museum
Contains rare pictures and other historical items from the Cretan Revolution against the Turks; the Balkanian Wars; the Macedonian War (1903- 1908) as well as memorabilia from World War II and the Battle of Crete (1941- 1945).
